Canon Point; Post Chapter 26 – After deciding not to look at Kana's wedding pictures.
Age; Twenty seven
House; Heimdall. Hatori is the type of person who takes his duties to his family as their doctor seriously as well as his own place as the one that erases the memories of those who have come to find out about the zodiac curse. He never once tries to blame anyone else, and shoulders the burden of what he has to do in order to protect and safe guard the others who are cursed, even if they dislike him or distrust him.

Hatori Sohma is one of the secondary characters of the manga “Fruits Basket” by Natsuki Takaya. Being one of the older members of the zodiac cursed part of the Sohma family, Hatori by nature is very much withdrawn from the people that do not know about the curse and Akito accuses him as being cold as ice. However, it is the heavy burden that has been thrust upon the adult that causes him to act this way.
Not only is he Akito's personal doctor and the doctor of the Sohma's soley, Hatori is also gifted with the power to erase people's memories. He is called upon to do this several times when it comes to the members of the zodiac having somehow had their secrets revealed. This is a point of tension between Hatori and Yuki when Hatori first appears because Yuki had been discovered as the rat of the zodiac when he was smaller. Hatori had been called in to erase all the memories of Yuki's friends leaving him alone.
Despite being withdrawn towards those not in the family, Hatori is actually a very caring individual. So much so that he tends to worry about others and put them before himself. He does this when he randomly meets Tohru in the street and she trips. Even though knowing the rules of the curse, he reaches out and saves her only to change and himself need to be aided by the other. He also warns to leave the Sohma family alone because he doesn't want her to be hurt. He is also accused by Shigure about worrying too much about others that it becomes an inconvenience.
His own personal story about his lover Kana is also a testament to how far he is willing to go for other people. Being likened to an unfeeling person, Hatori did what he was told because he knew it was his duty. He pushed aside his feelings and continued to do as he was told for a very long time. That's when Kana came into his life and changed it as her kindness and bright spirit melted the ice in Hatori, especially after she saw his zodiac form. She loved him, and he had fallen in love with her. Having found someone who accepted him, and had found out about the curse Hatori asked Akito if they could marry, and in a fit of rage Akito injured Hatori and the other lost sight in his left eye. Kana became broken at the thought that she wasn't strong enough to protect Hatori, and instead of letting her suffer to keep her love, Hatori erased her memories. While Akito saw this as cold to be able to do, Hatori wanted his love to be happy and several time throughout the manga wishes for “ her happiness.” Seeing a lot of Kana in Tohru, Hatori is content to watch over the girl and the Sohma's who become attached to her, praying that they are stronger than he and Kana were.
However, this does not mean that Hatori is a push over. He is far from the type that lets himself be pushed around, and in fact is very strong himself in his own commands. This is seen in volume two when Hatori and Momiji show up to the school festival, and Hatori meets with Tohru alone and tells her to come to the Main house without letting Yuki or Kyo know. This also helps him because he is a very task oriented individual completing what he needs to do in order to get his work done before he ventures off into something new. This is the case with his doctor check up of Yuki in the middle of the festival.
While Hatori can be serious, that doesn't stop him from prodding at others when he thinks something is silly or absurd. His side remarks to Yuki during the check up about his dressing up like a girl are proof that even the most stoic of the zodiac can indeed needle others every once in a while. His private thoughts also when talking with Shigure and Ayame are telling of another part of this side of his personality also point out that he picks and chooses the times when the best use a comment to poke at someone. While he could have said half the things he was thinking out loud, instead of interrupting his cousins, Hatori kept his remarks to himself allowing the duo to speak their thoughts towards the end of chapter 26.
Being one of three of the oldest zodiac members, Hatori shared a close relationship with his two cousins Shigure and Ayame while growing up. They were so close in fact that they were known as the mabudachi trio. All three tend to have traits that balance each other out, however Hatori is also the most mature of the three, and is also unaffected when Shigure and Ayame get together and joke around making others uncomfortable. Shigure and Hatori share a relationship that is based on truth since Hatori is the only one that Shigure tells about his plots, and Ayame admires him making Hatori the only one that he listens to when he goes too far.
Hatori also takes it upon himself to try and clean up the messes that his more energetic cousin makes. When they were in high school, Ayame was the president of the student council, however when an incident occurred where boys went to the red light district, instead of giving a viable solution Ayame offered himself up to be the object of their affections. It was Hatori that ended up smoothing everything over and making it to where the boys weren't expelled, and to where Ayame retained his status as student council president.
Just because he was the most mature of the three doesn't mean he doesn't have a side of him that doesn't play tricks. We see this also at the festival when he asks Yuki and Kyo “what is one plus one?” and when they say two he takes a picture of them for Akito. Knowing they would never smile on their accord, he does what he has to in order to get a picture that Akito will find amusing.
This is as far as his trickery goes showing his very steadfast and moral part of his personality. Upon him talking with Shigure and pointing at how much of a mess he was making by playing with others, Hatori tells his close cousin that he will not help him. However, also expressing his loyalty, Hatori also points out that he will not become Shigure's enemy, leaving the dog up to his tricks as he watches what is going to unfold.
Hatori's relationship with Akito also has shaped him into the withdrawn person he is before he meets Kana. When Shigure comes to pick up Tohru from her visit with Hatori at the main house, Hatori apologizes for making Tohru cry over someone as “trivial” as him. While that part of him is there, it is carefully guarded and only comes out in his personal thoughts, and sometimes in his words when talking about himself. He is also very self conscious about his zodiac form being the dragon of the zodiac. Instead of changing into a real dragon, he changes into a sea horse, which is also known as the child of a dragon. When Shigure goes to tell Tohru what zodiac animal Hatori is, he threatens to spill everything embarrassing that Shigure had done since he was four if he tells her showing just how far he is willing to push to keep his form a secret.
Even though Hatori has had his share of misfortune due to being zodiac. Even though he has lost his love Kana, and lost his eye sight because of Akito, the true strength shows the most because he doesn't become bitter about the hand fate dealt him. Instead of blaming Akito, he blames himself that he wasn't strong enough to protect himself so that Kana had been hurt far worse than he has. After he erases her memories, he lets her go to find happiness, and doesn't try to interfere even though he still loves her even when she is getting married to another man. This shows that over all he is a strong character that walks along his path without truly regretting anything that has happened to him.
